2019年8月6日Endocrine disruptors are substances that are all too prevalent in our homes and environment these days. They are found in items ranging from plastic food storage containers to common household cleaners, and are even in many of the foods we buy at the grocery store! In my patients’ quest for optimal health, and especially when there are plans for a baby(ies) in the future, I strongly recommend patients take a good look at their home and working environment to see where they are, knowingly or unknowingly, being exposed to endocrine disrupting substances. To know why to avoid endocrine disruptors, it is important to know why they are so BAD for our health. In short, endocrine disrupters mimic our body’s natural hormones, leading to disruptions in hormones feedback loops, blocking hormones receptor sites so that other hormones can’t do their job and increasing or decreasing levels of certain hormones. This leads to utter chaos in your endocrine system, hormones start doing things they shouldn’t and conditions like infertility, autoimmunity and metabolic disorders arise. The list goes on and on. However, these are some of the main reasons that patients walk through our clinic door. You have probably heard of some of the most common endocrine disruptors, such as BPA (bisphenol-A), phthalates, fluoride (the one in our water and toothpaste), certain pesticides, etc. The list is endless and this, unfortunately, leads to one disappointing piece of information: it is simply impossible to completely avoid endocrine disruptors. They are hidden in hundreds of common household products like cleaners, sunscreen bug spray, personal care and beauty products, as well as children’s toys and adult toys (electronics!!!). They are cheaper, too. Get rid of conventional household cleaners, especially ones labeled as anti-bacterial. Make your own cleaners from vinegar, lemon, castile soap, essential oils and baking soda. They work great and are healthy for you and the environment. Trade plastic kitchen utensils, bowls, serving dishes for ceramic, metal or bamboo types. Trade your personal care and beauty items for all-natural, organic or even homemade versions. Beauty products can be some of the worst places for hidden endocrine disruptors.
